Horny Goat Weed: The Story Behind the Name
Horny goat weed has a famous name and an old folk story to match.
The plant
Horny goat weed is the common name for plants in the Epimedium family. VapoFil names Epimedium sagittatum. The plants grow on shady slopes in China and nearby regions.
The goat herder story
The tale says a goat herder saw his goats grow lively after grazing on the plant. It is a folk story, but it gave the herb its English name.
A Chinese name
In China the herb is called yin yang huo, and it has been part of traditional herbal practice for a very long time.
What is on the label
VapoFil lists 8 mg of a 10:1 extract per serving, which the label says equals about 80 mg of dry herb.* The herb holds a plant compound called icariin.
A friendly pairing
The label also lists tongkat ali. Read Saw Palmetto next to meet the palm berry.
